A Star Japanese ("the app") is an educational application that helps people learn the Japanese language — covering hiragana, katakana, grammar, vocabulary, and kanji. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information

Users may access all core content — lessons, quizzes, and flashcards — without creating an account using the guest mode option on the login screen. No personal information is collected from guest users.

When you choose to create an account, we collect:

• Email address — used to identify your account and send important notices
• Name — used to personalise your in-app experience
• Password — stored securely using industry-standard hashing (we never store plain-text passwords)

2.2 Study Progress Data

Progress data is only collected for users with an account. Guest users have no data stored on our servers. For account holders, we store:

• Lessons you have completed and when
• Quiz scores and attempt history
• Flashcard review history and spaced repetition state
• Study streak data
• Achievements you have unlocked
• Your selected study goal and starting module

This data is stored securely and used solely to power your personalised learning experience.

2.3 Notification Preferences

If you enable study reminders, we store:

• Whether reminders are enabled (on/off)
• Your preferred reminder time (hour and minute)

We do not access your device's contact list, location, camera, microphone, or any other personal data beyond what is listed above.

2.4 Usage Data

We do not currently collect analytics, crash reports, or behavioural tracking data beyond what is described in section 2.2.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Provide and operate the A Star Japanese app
• Personalise your learning experience (progress tracking, streaks, recommendations)
• Send you daily study reminder notifications (only if you opt in)
• Respond to support requests

We do not:

• Sell your data to third parties
• Use your data for advertising
• Share your data with any third party except as described in section 4

4. Third-Party Services

A Star Japanese uses the following third-party services to operate:

These services process data only as necessary to provide their functions. We do not use advertising networks, social media trackers, or analytics platforms.

5. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data directly within the app by navigating to Profile → Delete Account. Upon confirmation, all your personal data, study progress, quiz history, and achievements are permanently removed from our systems within 30 days.

Guest users have no data stored on our servers and therefore have nothing to delete.

Study progress data for account holders is retained for the lifetime of your account so you can track your improvement over time.

6. Children and Young People

A Star Japanese is suitable for learners of all ages, including children and young people. We do not knowingly collect more data than is necessary to provide the educational service. We do not serve advertising, and we do not share user data with any third party for commercial purposes.

If you are under 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your country), please ensure a parent or guardian has reviewed this policy before you create an account. Guest mode may be used without parental consent as no personal information is collected.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information without your consent, please contact us at privacy@astarlearner.com and we will delete the data promptly.

7. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data:

• All data is transmitted over HTTPS (TLS encryption)
• Passwords are hashed using bcrypt before storage
• Database access is restricted using row-level security (RLS) policies — users can only access their own data
• Authentication tokens are stored securely on device

No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. If you have security concerns, please contact us immediately.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Delete your account and all associated data — available directly in the app via Profile → Delete Account
• Export your data in a portable format (on request)
• Withdraw consent for notifications at any time via Settings → Profile in the app, or your device's notification settings

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, by notifying you within the app.

Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
