〜ものを — Meaning & Examples

"If only... (but instead)." Regret or unspoken reproach, often trailing off unfinished: 素直に謝ればいいものを、意地を張った.

〜ものを — "If Only... (But Instead)" 😤

ものを expresses regret or quiet reproach: things could have gone well, but they didn't — and the speaker isn't happy about it. It often trails off, unfinished.

Pattern: [plain form, often potential/conditional] + ものを

素直に謝ればいいものを、彼は意地を張り続けた。
= If only he'd just apologised honestly — but instead he kept being stubborn.

もっと早く言ってくれればよかったものを。
= If only you'd told me sooner... (but you didn't, and now it's too late)

黙っていればものを、余計なことを言ってしまった。
= If only I'd kept quiet — but I went and said something I shouldn't have.

The trailing silence: Sentences often end right at ものを, leaving the blame or regret unspoken — the listener fills in the rest. This is very characteristic of ものを.

Key feeling: A sigh with words in it — "it could have been fine, if only..."

    • You told me early enough
    • You should never tell me anything
    • If only you had told me sooner (but you didn't)
