Meaning & Examples
"With X as the turning point." A boundary on the timeline — before/after X. Cf. を機に (a chosen opportunity) vs を境に (a dividing line, often unchosen).
With X as the Turning Point"
を境に(して) marks the precise boundary line where something changed — before X it was one way, after X it was another.
Pattern: [noun] +
= With the move as the turning point, my daily rhythm changed dramatically.
= After my father's death, my mother suddenly seemed to age.
= That incident marked a turning point after which his way of thinking completely changed.
を機に vs を境に: を機に(に) treats X as an opportunity that PROMPTED a deliberate choice (結婚を機に仕事を辞めた = taking marriage as the occasion, she chose to quit). を境に treats X as a boundary line where change simply happened, often not by choice (父の死を境に = after my father's death, as a dividing line).
Key feeling: A line drawn on a timeline — "before this, after this," with the change itself often outside anyone's control.
