せいで = because of (blame, negative). おかげで = thanks to (credit, positive, N4 review).

〜ばかりに and せいで — Placing the Blame

〜ばかりに = "all because of / just because of." It pins a bad result on one specific, often small, trigger — and carries strong regret, frequently the speaker's own regret about their own action.

Formation: plain form (any tense) +

= Just because I said one unnecessary thing, I ended up making him angry.

= All because I bought a cheap one, it broke right away.

= Just because I'm the new person, I got landed with the responsibility.

The ばかりに feel: "if only I hadn't..." — the cause is small or almost trivial, and the result feels disproportionately bad.

---

〜せいで = "because of" (blame), reviewed from N3. Broader than ばかりに — the cause doesn't have to be small, and the regret is less personal/intense.

= Because of the traffic jam, I was late.

Quick contrast with its positive twin,
= Thanks to you, I succeeded. (positive)

= Because of you, I failed. (negative, blame)

Placement guide for the whole family:
Wasted effort, ironic bad ending → あげく

Long effort, outcome open (can be good) → 末に

Small trigger, personal regret →

General blame, less personal →
