ものだ (nostalgia) — Meaning & Examples
Past tense + よく + ものだ = fond reminiscence about the past. よくここで遊んだものだ = I used to play here a lot.
ものだ — The Way Things Are
ものだ = a general truth or shared social norm — not your personal opinion, but "that's just how it is / how things go."
Formation: plain form + ものだ
人は誰でも間違えるものだ。
= People make mistakes — that's just how it is. (a universal truth, not one person's opinion)
時間はあっという間に過ぎるものだ。
= Time really does fly by. (a shared observation about life)
〜ものではない = a gentle "you shouldn't" — a social norm, not a rule
人の悪口を言うものではない。
= You shouldn't speak ill of others. (a soft, almost proverbial norm — gentler than 言うべきではない)
Compare the force:
言うべきではない = my judgement that you shouldn't say it
言うものではない = that's simply not something one does (a shared, near-proverbial norm)
ものだ also expresses NOSTALGIA, almost always with past tense + よく:
子供のころ、よくここで遊んだものだ。
= As a kid, I used to play here a lot. (fond reminiscence)
昔はもっと星がよく見えたものだ。
= You used to be able to see the stars much better back then.
And exasperated admiration:
彼はよく食べるものだ!
= Boy, does he eat a lot! (genuine surprise at how extreme something is)
