〜に対して — Meaning & Examples
Toward / in response to — marks the target of an attitude, response or ratio. 質問に対して答える = answer in response to a question. Also marks contrast.
〜について vs 〜に対して
These two are the pair learners confuse most.
〜について = the subject matter. What is being discussed, researched, written or thought about.
環境問題について話し合いました。
= We discussed the environmental problem.
この件について説明します。
= I will explain about this matter.
More formal written variant: 〜に関して（かんして）
本件に関しては、後日ご連絡します。
= Regarding this matter, we will contact you at a later date.

〜に対して = the receiving end. Something is directed at a person or thing — an attitude, a response, a reaction, a ratio.
学生の質問に対して、先生は丁寧に答えた。
= The teacher answered the students' questions politely. (the answer is directed at the questions)
彼女は動物に対してとても優しい。
= She is very kind toward animals.
The test: could you insert "toward" or "in response to"?
❌ 環境問題に対して話し合いました。 (you don't discuss "toward" a problem)
✅ 環境問題について話し合いました。
〜に対して also marks contrast:
兄は静かなのに対して、弟はにぎやかだ。
= Whereas the older brother is quiet, the younger is lively.
