JLPT N3 grammar

Meaning & Examples

Expresses effort/intention. Making something a habit or rule. 運動するようにしている = I make a point of exercising. The effort version.

Make a Habit Of / Try To"

ようにする expresses making an EFFORT to do something — actively trying to make it a habit or rule.

Pattern: [dictionary form OR ない-form] + ようにする

Positive — try to do:
毎日、運動するようにしています。

= I'm trying to exercise every day. (effort/habit)

= Please try to eat lots of vegetables.

= I'm trying to think in Japanese.

Negative — try NOT to do:
夜遅く食べないようにしています。

= I'm trying not to eat late at night.

= Let's try not to eat too much sweet stuff.

Pattern variants:

〜ようにします (will try to from now)

〜ようにしてください (please make sure to)

I've started exercising (it just happened)

I'm making myself exercise (effort)

The difference is intention!
