〜ようとする — Meaning & Examples
Be about to / try to do. 出かけようとしたとき雨が降ってきた (about to); 嘘をつこうとした (tried to). Volitional form + とする.
〜ようとする — Trying To / About To
〜ようとする = be about to / try to do — attach the volitional form (〜(よ)う) to とする.
Volitional forms: する→しよう / 来る→来よう / 食べる→食べよう / 行く→行こう / 飲む→飲もう
① About to do something (usually with とき / たら):
家を出ようとしたとき、雨が降ってきた。
= Just as I was about to leave the house, it started to rain.
電車に乗ろうとしたら、ドアが閉まった。
= I was about to board the train when the doors closed.
② Making an attempt (often one that doesn't succeed):
彼は嘘をつこうとしたが、顔に出てしまった。
= He tried to lie, but it showed on his face.
③ 〜ようとしない = won't even try / refuses to:
息子は野菜を食べようとしない。
= My son won't even try to eat vegetables.
彼は自分の間違いを認めようとしない。
= He refuses to admit his mistake.
ようとする vs ようにする (N3 changes lesson):
毎日野菜を食べるようにしている。 = I make a point of eating vegetables daily. (an ongoing habit I'm working on)
野菜を食べようとしている。 = I'm trying to eat vegetables (right now). (the attempt in the moment) 🚪
