JLPT N4 grammar
〜ながら — Meaning & Examples
Two simultaneous actions by the SAME person; the second is the main one. Different subjects require 〜間に instead.
〜ながら — Doing Two Things at Once
〜ながら links two simultaneous actions by the same person.
Formation: ます-stem + ながら
音楽を聞きながら、勉強します。
= I study while listening to music.
Two rules that catch people out:
1. The MAIN action is the second one.
音楽を聞きながら勉強する = studying is the point; music is background.
勉強しながら音楽を聞く = listening is the point. (a different sentence!)
2. Both actions must have the SAME subject.
❌ 妹が歌いながら、私は料理した。 (different people — cannot use ながら)
✅ 妹が歌っている間に、私は料理した。 (use 間に instead)
More examples:
コーヒーを飲みながら、新聞を読みます。
= I read the paper while drinking coffee. ☕
歩きながらスマホを見るのは危ないです。
= Looking at your phone while walking is dangerous.
Bonus meaning — 〜ながらも = "even though":
知っていながら、教えてくれなかった。
= Even though he knew, he didn't tell me.
This second use is closer to のに, and appears at N3, but you will hear it.

1. 音楽を聞きながら勉強します — which is the MAIN action?
- Listening to music

- Both equally
- Neither
Show answer
Answer: Studying
With ながら, the SECOND verb is the main action. Studying is the point; music is background.
2. Why is 妹が歌いながら、私は料理した wrong?
- ながら needs the past tense
- ながら requires both actions to have the same subject
- 歌う cannot take ながら
- It needs を instead of が
Show answer
Answer: ながら requires both actions to have the same subject
ながら requires ONE person doing both actions. For different subjects use 間に: 妹が歌っている間に、私は料理した.
