Meaning & Examples

"While it lasts" — do it before the situation changes. 温かいうちに食べて = eat while it is still warm. 〜ないうちに = before it happens.

While It Lasts"

〜うちに also means "while," but it carries a warning: do it before the situation changes.

〜うちに = while the condition still holds (and it won't last)

= Please eat it while it is still warm. (before it goes cold)

= You should travel a lot while you are young.

= Let's go home while it is still light.

〜ないうちに = before it becomes the case

= Let's go home before it rains.

= I will make a note before I forget.

— Neutral: it happened during that window.

— Urgent: the window is closing! ⏳

間に just states the timing. うちに adds "so take your chance."
