〜からといって — Meaning & Examples
Just because X, that doesn't mean Y — blocks an assumed inference. Pairs with わけではない/とは限らない. 高いからといって質がいいわけではない.
〜からといって — Don't Jump to That Conclusion
〜からといって = "just because X, that doesn't (necessarily) mean Y." It blocks an inference the listener might otherwise assume — X is true, but it doesn't automatically lead to Y.
Formation: plain form + からといって, usually followed by 〜わけではない or 〜とは限らない
高いからといって、質がいいわけではない。
= Just because it's expensive doesn't mean the quality is good.
日本人だからといって、みんな漢字が得意なとは限らない。
= Just because someone is Japanese doesn't mean everyone is good at kanji.
忙しいからといって、返事をしないのはよくない。
= Just because you're busy, that's no excuse not to reply. (here it blocks an implied excuse, not just a factual inference)
からといって almost always sets up a correction. Something a listener might reasonably assume gets explicitly denied. That makes it a favourite of persuasive writing and opinion pieces — it lets a writer name the obvious-sounding assumption before dismantling it.
Putting the whole lesson together — a realistic N2 sentence:
実際に自分でやってみないことには、その大変さは分からない。しかし、大変だからといって、諦めるべきではない。むしろ、一度経験してはじめて、本当の面白さに気づくこともある。
= Unless you actually try it yourself, you can't know how hard it is. But just because it's hard doesn't mean you should give up. In fact, sometimes it's only after experiencing it once that you notice its real appeal.
Three patterns, one paragraph, exactly the density of real N2 reading. 📖

Show answer
Answer: Just because it's expensive doesn't mean the quality is good
〜からといって blocks an assumed inference — here, that "expensive" automatically means "good quality." Often paired with わけではない.
2. 〜からといって is most often followed by which kind of clause?
- A simple positive statement
- わけではない or とは限らない — denying an assumed conclusion
- A question

Show answer
Answer: わけではない or とは限らない — denying an assumed conclusion
からといって sets up a correction: X is true, but that doesn't mean Y — so it pairs naturally with denial phrases like わけではない/とは限らない.
3. 忙しいからといって、返事をしないのはよくない means?
- Because you're busy, not replying is fine
- You should never reply when busy
- Just because you're busy, that's no excuse not to reply
- Being busy means you must reply immediately
Show answer
Answer: Just because you're busy, that's no excuse not to reply
Here からといって blocks an implied excuse (being busy) rather than a pure factual inference — the same core function, applied to justification.
