〜てはじめて — Meaning & Examples
Only after doing X did I realise Y — pairs with 分かる/気づく/実感する. 親になってはじめて分かった. The realisation was impossible before X.
〜てはじめて — Only Then Did I Realise
〜てはじめて = "only after doing X did I (realise/understand/appreciate) Y." It frames X as the experience that had to happen first for a realisation to become possible — you couldn't have known Y any other way.
Formation: verb-て form + はじめて
親になってはじめて、親のありがたさが分かった。
= Only after becoming a parent did I understand how much I owe my own parents.
病気になってはじめて、健康の大切さに気づいた。
= Only after getting sick did I realise how important health is.
実際にやってみてはじめて、その難しさが分かる。
= You only understand how difficult it is once you actually try it yourself.
The pattern almost always pairs with a realisation verb: 分かる, 気づく, 実感する, 知る. That's not a coincidence — てはじめて exists specifically to frame belated understanding.
Compare with plain 〜て:
親になって、大変だと思った。 = I became a parent and thought it was hard. (simple sequence)
親になってはじめて、大変さが分かった。 = Only by becoming a parent did I truly understand how hard it is. (realisation was impossible before)
