Meaning & Examples

"It's not (necessarily) that..." A PARTIAL denial that softens an assumption. 嫌いなわけではない = it's not that I dislike it. Often with 別に.

It's Not (Necessarily) That..."

わけではない is a PARTIAL denial. It softly corrects a likely assumption — "it's not that...", "that doesn't mean...".

Pattern: [plain form] +

= It's not that I dislike it, but I don't eat it much.

= It's not that I can't speak Japanese at all — I can speak a little.

= It's not that I won't buy it because it's expensive — I just don't need it now.

Very common with 別に (betsu ni) = "not particularly":
別に怒っているわけじゃないよ。

= It's not like I'm angry or anything.

Also: 〜というわけではない (slightly more formal/emphatic):
お金が全てというわけではない。

= It's not that money is everything.

Key feeling: Softening or correcting an over-strong conclusion the listener might jump to. Essential for nuanced, polite Japanese.
