The ば restriction — Meaning & Examples

If the ば-clause is an ACTION verb, you cannot follow it with a request, command or intention — use たら instead. Fine with states: 安ければ, 分からなければ, できれば.

The ば Restriction

Here is a rule most textbooks skip, and the JLPT loves.

If the ば-clause is an ACTION verb, you cannot follow it with a request, command, invitation or statement of intention.

❌ 東京に行けば、連絡してください。
✅ 東京に行ったら、連絡してください。

= When you go to Tokyo, please get in touch.

❌ 時間があれば、手伝ってください。 (borderline — many speakers avoid it)
✅ 時間があったら、手伝ってください。

But it's fine when the ば-clause is a STATE — an adjective, a potential form, or ある/いる:

✅ 安ければ、買ってください。 = If it's cheap, please buy it. (adjective)
✅ 分からなければ、聞いてください。 = If you don't understand, please ask. (negative state)

✅ できれば、来てください。 = If possible, please come. (potential)

できれば is worth memorising on its own — "if possible" — one of the most useful softeners in polite Japanese.

The safe habit: if the second clause contains ください, ましょう, つもり or たい, reach for たら unless the first clause is clearly a state. ⚖️

Answer: An ACTION-verb ば-clause cannot be followed by a request — use たら

The ば restriction: if the ば-clause is an action verb, no request/command/intention may follow. 東京に行ったら、連絡してください.

  2. 2. できれば、来てください means?

    • You must come
    • You do not have to come
    • When you can come, tell me
    • If possible, please come
    Show answer

    Answer: If possible, please come

できれば = if possible — a potential form, so the ば restriction does not apply. One of the most useful softeners in polite Japanese.
