JLPT N4 grammar

Meaning & Examples

"May / it's OK to." 座ってもいいですか (suwattemo ii desu ka) = may I sit?

Casual Forms + 〜

In casual speech, なければならない gets shortened — you'll hear these constantly!

Casual "gotta":

The second half is often dropped entirely:

(mou ikanakya.) = I gotta go now.

(benkyō shinakucha.) = I've gotta study.

"Don't have to" — 〜なくてもいい:
The opposite of obligation.

(ashita wa konakutemo ii desu.)
= You don't have to come tomorrow.

(shinpai shinakutemo ii yo.)
= You don't need to worry.

Be careful: なければならない (must) and なくてもいい (don't have to) are opposites — don't mix them up!
