"Only by doing X (does Y hold)." The て-form action is the essential condition for a positive outcome.
Only By Doing X..."
てこそ says that ONLY through doing X does Y become true or meaningful. The て-form action is the essential ingredient.
= Only by struggling yourself do you understand the joy of success.
= Only by helping each other can people live.
= Real confidence is born only by overcoming difficulties.
Structure notes:
- The second clause is a POSITIVE outcome (understanding, growth, meaning).
- Often ends with 〜ものだ or plain statements of truth — it declares a life principle.
Compare:
I worked and got paid.(simple sequence)
Only by working do you grasp the value of money.(principle)
Key feeling: A proverb-like declaration — X isn't just one way to reach Y; it's the ONLY meaningful way.
