〜よりほかない/ほかない — Meaning & Examples

"There's nothing for it but to" — no other option remains. [dictionary form] + よりほかない. 歩いて帰るよりほかない. Close to しかない but more formal/emphatic.

〜よりほかない / 〜ほかない — "Nothing For It But To"

よりほかない (and the shorter ほかない) means no other option remains — the only path left is this one.

Pattern: [dictionary form] + よりほかない / ほか(は)ない

終電を逃したので、歩いて帰るよりほかない。
= I missed the last train, so there's nothing for it but to walk home.

こうなっては、あきらめるほかない。
= Now that it's come to this, there's no choice but to give up.

誰も助けてくれないなら、自分でやるよりほかはない。
= If no one will help, there's nothing to do but do it myself.

Closely related to 〜しかない (N3):
やるしかない ≈ やるよりほかない. The よりほかない version is slightly more formal/emphatic, stressing that every other option has been ruled out.

Key feeling: Every alternative is exhausted; this is the last road left. Neutral-to-formal in tone.
