〜ずにはいられない — Meaning & Examples
"Can't help (doing)" — an inner urge you can't suppress. [ない-stem] + ずにはいられない. する→せずにはいられない. 泣かずにはいられない = can't help crying.
〜ずにはいられない — "Can't Help (Doing)"
ずにはいられない expresses an impulse or emotion you cannot hold back — you do it spontaneously, almost involuntarily.
Pattern: [verb ない-stem] + ずにはいられない
(する → せずにはいられない ※irregular)
あの映画を見ると、泣かずにはいられない。
= When I watch that film, I can't help crying.
こんなにおいしそうだと、食べずにはいられない。
= Looking this delicious, I can't help eating it.
子どものことが心配で、電話せずにはいられなかった。
= I was so worried about my child that I couldn't help calling.
Contrast with ざるを得ない:
・ざるを得ない = forced by external circumstance (reluctant duty)
・ずにはいられない = driven by an internal urge (can't suppress a feeling)
泣かざるを得ない = forced into a position where I must cry(odd)
泣かずにはいられない = I can't stop myself from crying(natural)✓
Key feeling: A welling-up impulse — emotional, spontaneous, irresistible.
