〜ざるを得ない — Meaning & Examples

"Have no choice but to" — forced by circumstances, reluctant, formal. [ない-stem] + ざるを得ない. する→せざるを得ない. 中止せざるを得なかった = had no choice but to cancel.

〜ざるを得ない — "Have No Choice But To"

ざるを得ない means you're forced into something by circumstances — reluctantly, against your wishes. It's formal in tone.

Pattern: [verb ない-stem] + ざるを得ない
(する → せざるを得ない ※irregular)

台風のため、旅行を中止せざるを得なかった。
= Because of the typhoon, we had no choice but to cancel the trip.

上司の命令だから、従わざるを得ない。
= Since it's the boss's order, I have no choice but to obey.

これだけ証拠があれば、認めざるを得ない。
= With this much evidence, one has no choice but to admit it.

Watch the する exception: する → せざるを得ない (not しざるを得ない).
参加する → 参加せざるを得ない。

Key feeling: Reluctant acceptance forced by outside circumstances — "I'd rather not, but I must." More formal and literary than 〜しかない.
