〜ものの — Meaning & Examples

〜ものの — "Although" (Written / Formal)

ものの is the elegant, written-register way to say "although." You'll see it in essays, news, novels, and business writing.

Pattern: [plain form] + ものの

Examples:
日本語を勉強し始めたものの、なかなか上達しない。

= Although I started studying Japanese, I'm not making much progress.

旅行に行くことにしたものの、まだ準備ができていない。
= Although I decided to travel, I'm not ready yet.

合格したものの、まだ安心できない。
= Although I passed, I can't relax yet.

値段は高いものの、品質は素晴らしい。
= Although the price is high, the quality is excellent.

Feeling: Honest acknowledgement — "I admit X is true, BUT..." No blame, no complaint — just balanced honesty.

The full trio in one story:
せっかく計画を立てたのに、友達がキャンセルした。

= I made all these plans, and my friend cancelled. (disappointed)

約束を守れないくせに、いつも誘ってくる。
= They can never keep promises, yet they always invite me. (accusation)

参加したいものの、仕事が忙しい。
= Although I want to join, work is too busy. (honest)
