JLPT N3 grammar
〜のに — Meaning & Examples
"Even though" with disappointment/surprise. せっかく〜のに = I went to all that trouble and yet... The speaker expected better. Very common in daily speech and drama.
〜のに — Disappointed "Even Though"
のに connects two clauses where the result is UNEXPECTED and the speaker is disappointed or surprised.
Pattern: [plain form] + のに
Examples:
せっかく作ったのに、誰も食べなかった。
= I went to all that trouble to make it, and nobody ate it. (gutted!)
一生懸命勉強したのに、落ちてしまった。
= I studied so hard, yet I still failed. (heartbroken)
待ってたのに、来なかった!
= I was waiting and everything, but you didn't come!
早く起きたのに、電車が遅れた。
= I woke up early, and yet the train was late.
The key feeling: The speaker EXPECTED something good (or at least not bad), but the outcome was disappointing. のに often translates as "yet," "but," or "even though."
A famous のに phrase in Japanese culture:
せっかくのに! = After all that trouble!
せっかく (sekkaku) is THE word for "I went to all this trouble / made a special effort" — and pairing it with のに makes it even more dramatically disappointed. You'll hear it constantly in dramas and daily life.
With adjectives:
いい天気なのに、外に出られない。
= It's nice weather, and yet I can't go outside. (bummer!)
